Too Good to be True

If something is too good to be true, it usually is... but not always...

There is an age-old saying which goes "if it's too good to be true, it probably is..."

I'd tend to agree with this in most instances, but as a business owner I sometimes forget this basic principle when thinking of ways to generate more clients.

Several times I have come up with amazingly cheap website deals, thinking that it will drive the masses to my website and convert to sales, but every time I have been disappointed with the response.

There have also been times when I have quoted on a job and because of the systems and processes I have in place, we have the experience and resources to develop the website considerably cheaper than a lot of other developers. Quoting honestly and realistically has meant that my quote comes out way under what other people are quoting, and all of a sudden my quote appears to be "too good to be true".

I remember a time when I was in the UK and we took to the streets at easter to hand out free Cadbury Cream Eggs - my favourite - just to do something good for the community. You would not believe how hard it was to give them away! Everyone thought there must be a catch, it sounds too good to be true...

The more I think about this saying, the more I realise that we potentially miss out on some great deals in life because we don't think to ask questions. If something sounds too good to be true, ask the question "why?". Find out who it is offering it, what exactly they are offering, why they are offering it and if all that checks out, you may just find yourself with the deal of a lifetime!
